Incorporate Games into their Lessons and Your Boys will Love to Learn

When my sons have been doing their lessons for awhile and I notice that their enthusiasm is gone, I try to think of ways that I can add games to our day. I've found that my sons will do their schoolwork much more rapidly and happily if I'm able to make it seem as if they're playing a game. Boys like lots of opportunities for physical activity, so these games also make it so they aren't required to sit still for long periods of time.

Try these ideas for making a lesson into a game:

  • Have your boys run laps around the house between math problems

  • Let them run down the hall, touch the wall, and run back after classifying a sentence.

  • Let them compete with a sibling to see who can finish their assignment faster.

  • Set a timer and see how long it takes for them to complete a task.

  • Let them somersault off the couch or across the living room floor if they get the answer right.

  • A game of leap frog (while learning about silent letters)

  • Let them do a puzzle or a short computer activity between subjects

We've found that our boys enjoy lots of varied activity. They don't want to sit down and complete worksheets every day. Try adding in these and any other activities you can think of to turn their schoolwork into a game and you will face much less resistance from your sons while homeschooling.
