5 Simple Ways to Enjoy Your Boys

Overview: Being a mother of boys has its pleasant moments and its difficult moments – just like everything else in life. Here are 5 ways to enjoy your boys!

Having sons can be so much fun. At least sometimes…

Unfortunately, not every day and not every moment of parenting boys is enjoyable. I understand how frustrating it can be when you’re trying to teach your sons something and they are busy having a burping contest with each other.

Or when you’re reading from a serious book and suddenly you hear snickering in the background.

Or even better yet, when your mother-in-law is around and the boys are modeling their exemplary behavior by slugging each other repeatedly.

5 Simple Ways to Enjoy Your Boys

Being a mother of boys has its enjoyable moments and its difficult moments – just like everything else in life. However, there are some easy ways that we can really start to enjoy our boys.

Here are 5 ways to enjoy your boys:

 1. Lighten Up

Often, when we become irritated with our boys, it’s because we are taking ourselves too seriously. Sometimes our sons need to mind their manners and obey. There are other times when they are just having fun and aren’t hurting anyone.

Learn not to take your son’s silliness personally. When he is cutting up and it isn’t hurting anything, just go with it. Life is too short to be so serious all the time.

 2. Learn to Laugh

When is the last time you rolled around on the floor while having a good ‘ole belly laugh? When is the last time your son did this? He has probably done it a lot more recently than you have.

Laughter is healing. It is a wonderful release. The next time your son is laughing, instead of getting upset with him, try joining in. You’ll feel so much better once you do.

3. Simplify

Our lives are way too busy. It seems like we’re often in a rush to get to the next place, start the next subject, make the next phone call… We need to learn to simplify our lives.

Don’t sign up for quite as many field trips. Don’t plan something outside of the house every day of the week. If necessary, schedule time into your day which is reserved for nothing – relaxation – enjoyment.

Learn to say, “No.” We all need downtime. We’ll enjoy our children so much more if we aren’t frazzled from always being on the run.

 4. Slow Down

Boys are slow. At least my boys are! When we have somewhere to go, it is much smoother if I leave plenty of time for us to get out of the house and arrive at our destination. Give yourself extra time!

If you know your boys have a tendency to dawdle getting on their shoes, then give them 10 minutes to do it. If you think it will take 15 minutes to get to your destination, give yourself 20 or 25.

This will take the pressure off of you AND your children and will allow you to enjoy the time you have together in the car. I’m the type of person who has a tendency to rush.

When I slow down and match my sons pace, I find myself in a much more mellow mood. That helps me to enjoy my boys more – and they enjoy me more as well!

 5. Take a ME Break

We all need time for ourselves. I know it’s hard to get away when you are a homeschool mom; but there are ways that most of us can do it. You can wait until your spouse gets home and then run errands on your own.

You can swap time with another homeschool mom: you watch her kids once a week (or once a month) and she’ll watch your kids once a month.

Now that my boys are tweens, I’m able to go for walks by myself during our lunch break. It may not be easy, but you should be able to schedule at least a little time by yourself (or alone with your spouse or a friend) at least once a month.

You will enjoy your boys much more if you have some alone time every once in a while.
