Many of us are fast approaching summer, which is a thrilling time of year for homeschoolers. We’ve been working hard preparing lessons all year long, correcting papers, going on field trips, and more. By the time the summer months arrive, many of us are ready to take off our teacher hats and have a nice, long rest. And our kids are ready for a break, too!
Unfortunately, when we allow our kids to take three full months off from lessons during the summer months, their brains often turn to mush. Somehow, they seem to forget everything we taught them the previous year making us have to backtrack once we begin homeschooling again in the fall.
The summer slide is no fun – for our kids or for us!
Seasoned homeschool moms know that even a small amount of reading and math practice over the summer will do wonders for helping our kids retain the information we’ve worked so hard to teach them. Some kids will balk, however, when faced with the thought of having to continue doing their school lessons over the summer. They see their friends spending long days at the beach or on the playground and the last thing they want to do is to sit at the dining room table filling out stacks of boring math worksheets.
To avoid these bad attitudes, we need to keep the lessons short and make them as fun as possible so that our kids still have plenty of time to enjoy those long, lazy summer days. And that’s where Splash Math comes in. I was given the opportunity to try this program for free and was compensated for my time but as always, I’m sharing my honest opinion with you.
Benefits for Students
Splash Math is an adaptive math app which gives kids the opportunity to practice their math skills while ensuring the content is the most engaging for your child’s unique needs. It’s visually stimulating for kids and the games are fun! Using the Splash Math app is a great way to reinforce what students are learning and/or to help them remember what they’ve learned over the summer.
Splash Math contains over 1,200 math facts and math skills for grades K through 5.
Answering questions on the Splash Math app is more fun for students than filling out math worksheets because of the fun visuals and sound effects. Also, kids are able to earn coins for each correct answer. They are able to save up these coins and use them to unlock additional characters. This helps keep kids motivated!
Splash Math can be used on a computer or on Apple or Android devices. It can even be used offline! And the content is ad-free keeping young eyes focused on the math and distraction free.
Benefits for Parents
Splash Math is an excellent math assistant for homeschooling parents. You are still the main math teacher for your child, however, now your kids can get the practice they need with each concept without having to resort to mind-numbing flash cards.
As my sons were growing up, they loved using math games and apps to help them practice their math. One of their favorites was Cool Math. And there are all sorts of neat games kids can play within these types of apps. But the downside is that parents have no idea what concepts their kids are learning and no way to relate the games to the lessons their kids are already learning.
That isn’t the case with Splash Math, which includes all sorts of tools that help parents to direct and assess what their kids are learning. It’s easy to look at the various math topics for each grade to find specific lessons for each child.
Parents can also see how much time their kids are actually spending doing their lessons and can set weekly goals for them.
And parents can also look at reports which show them quickly where their child is struggling and where they excel.
With Splash Math, kids are also able to practice math concepts independently while easily staying on top of their child’s progress, which is a huge benefit for kids and parents alike.
